Diet and Pregnancy do matter !

All medical practitioners should agree that a mother to be’s diet clearly affects her children. With the current research highlighting the chemical changes to the fetus, some of the foods and accepted diets need lots of revision. We should be counseling all women planning or currently pregnant.
The recent study, at the University of California, connected the dots regarding inflammation using a marker known as cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). They showed that the connectivity of brain structure was impacted adversely when the level of IL-6 is elevated.
The take home message…….chemical changes seen when using different diets will elevate and cause changes in your fetus’s brain development. Women of childbearing age should reduce food that can cause increased inflammation if they are considering a pregnancy or are pregnant. This means reductions in fried foods, red meats and use of saturated fats.
What to eat ? A mediterranean like diet, higher in the anti-inflamation foods and much lower in junk foods, is probably the best approach when coupled with a reduction to the daily environmental toxins that add to your inflammatory load. Add to this appropriate supplementation and stress reduction and we should reduce inflammation significantly.

Maternal Inflammation Impacts Offspring
A mom’s stress could lead to changes in her offspring’s brains that can affect the physiology and behavior of the young, researchers report at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting.

In a longitudinal study of mothers and their newborn babies, Claudia Buss of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University of California, Irvine, and her colleagues have found that increased production of the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) in a woman can lead to alterations in the brain connectivity of her offspring.
Meanwhile, researchers at Duke University have uncovered evidence in mice that maternal diet, which is linked to inflammation, can cause inflammatory and behavior changes in offspring.
Buss and her colleagues measured levels of IL-6 in maternal blood samples taken early in pregnancy, in the middle, and near the end, then performed MRI scans of the newborns shortly after birth. “This is the only way that we will be able to understand prenatal influences that are not confounded by post-natal influences,” Buss said today (November 17) at a press conference at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting in Washington, DC. Specifically, the team looked for patterns of synchronized activity in the default mode network (DMN), dysfunction of which has been linked to psychiatric disorders.
The group found that the infant DMN “doesn’t look like adult network, but it’s emerging,” Buss said. “It’s there in an immature state.” More importantly, higher maternal gestational IL-6 concentration predicted reduced DFM connectivity. The infant brain was “less strongly connected under conditions of high maternal IL-6 concentrations,” Buss said.
In a separate study, presented by Staci Bilbo of Duke University, researchers found that a mom’s high-fat diet—which can lead to inflammation in the body’s adipose tissue as well as immune changes in brain that may be linked to psychiatric disorders like anxiety and depression—can also impact her offspring. The researchers fed mice either a low-fat diet or a high-fat diet, either enriched or not enriched for branched cain amino acids (BCAAs). Looking at the mothers’ brains midway through pregnancy, the team found increased expression of inflammatory cytokines in the hypothalami of mice fed a high-fat diet. These changes were also accompanied by postpartum increases in depressive-like behaviors in mice fed a BCAA-enriched diet and an increase in anxiety-like behaviors in mice fed a high-fat diet.
Turning to the offspring, the researchers found some “striking” differences both in the expression of inflammatory cell types and in the behavior of the newborn pups, Bilbo said. Specifically, infants born to moms fed a high-fat diet showed decreased expression of microglia markers and increased anxiety-like behaviors.
